How Big Is A King Size Bedspread

Blogs 1810

Normally I would go straight to a standard answer: For a standard “Eastern King bed”, the ideal bedspread size is 120 inches wide x 110 inches long.

Here’s a misconception to correct: many people confuse bedspreads with the thick quilts we usually cover ourselves with (Comforters). A regular comforter usually only covers the mattress, but a true comforter goes for that “hanging feel” that elegantly covers the entire bed frame and box spring, even sweeping to the floor. If you buy a California King bed, the size specifications are completely different. It usually needs to be 114 inches wide x 120 inches long to fit the narrower and longer mattress proportions.

To achieve that perfect floor-to-ceiling vision, you have to calculate the “drop height” . This is done by measuring the distance from the top of the mattress to the ground. Most traditional beds drape about 21 inches. The purpose of choosing this wide size is to create the sharp, high-end texture of a high-end hotel. Don’t buy it small, otherwise half of the bed frame will be exposed next to the bed, and the visual effect will look very “shabby”.

Standard King Bed Vs. California King Bed

When choosing bedding, many homeowners take it for granted that King Size is universal. But if you’re looking for that kind of floor-hanging aesthetic that’s so characteristic of a bedspread, you’ll have to size up your seat based on your mattress type.

1. Standard King Bed Cover

This mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. To achieve perfect draping on all three sides:
Ideal size: 120″ x 110″
The calculation logic behind it: reserve 22 inches of vertical edge on each side (i.e. 76″ + 22″ + 22″ = 120″) and 30 inches at the end of the bed. The extra length is usually to reserve the classic “pillow-wrapped” at the head of the bed.

2. California King Bed Cover

The California King mattress is narrower and longer (72 inches wide x 84 inches long). If you take the comforter of a standard king bed and put it on, the result is bound to be awkward: the sides are too long to mop the floor, but the end of the bed won’t cover it.
Ideal size: 114″ x 120″
Calculation logic behind: This ensures a 21 to 22 inch sag on the sides while perfectly covering the California King’s longer bed frame.

Why Is The Size Difference So Big?

“How big is the King Size bedspread” is a high-frequency issue mainly because people often confuse bedspreads, thick quilts and quilt quilts.

  • Thick comforter/duvets core: Usually only around 104″ x 92″ in size. They are designed to cover only the mattress and a few inches of box spring edges.
  • Bedspreads: These are the largest of all bedding and are designed to sweep to the ground. If you buy one “King Comforter” expecting it to cover the entire bed frame, the results will definitely disappoint you and look cramped and unprofessional.

How To Measure The Perfect “Drop Height”?

Bedspread

The height of each bed is different, and not all beds are the standard 21 inches high. To prevent your bedspread from clumping on the floor or hanging in mid-air like you’re wearing it “skewer pants”, I recommend following designers’ measurements:

  1. Measure width: Start at the left floor, step over the top of the mattress, and measure all the way to the right floor.
  2. Measure the length: Measure from the head of the bed (or where you want the cover to start) to the ground at the end of the bed.
  3. Reserved Bag Pillow Place: If you like that retro feel of wrapping your pillow tightly in a bedspread, remember to add an extra 10 to 15 inches to the total length.

The Core Secret Of High-End Hotel Aesthetics

Why do top hotels insist on using such a generous 120″ x 110″ size?

Because this large size creates a visual continuity and architectural feel. Floor-standing bedspreads can instantly “transform” into those messy visual distractions, such as an ugly bed skirt, a box spring mattress with mismatched colors, or a storage box under the bed.

The “spend” on this size is worth it. It ensures that even if you roll over under the covers, the mattress is always fully covered. This “refined” and “premium ambiance” that can be maintained from morning till night is the key to enhancing the bedroom.
