How Much Fabric To Cover Dining Chair

Blogs 1530

If you’re just renovating one of those dining chairs that only has cushions, you’ll usually need 0.5 to 0.75 yards per chair. But if the chairs also need to be covered with the backrest, you’ll have to budget 1.5 to 2 yards per chair.

You have to find the longest and widest points of the cushion when measuring, and then leave an extra 3 to 4 inches of seam allowance around the edges, otherwise you won’t be able to tighten the cloth with tension and a nail gun. If you choose a fabric with a large loop pattern or a specific grain direction, remember to increase the total amount by 20% to align the pattern.

Why Is A 54-Inch Width At The Heart Of The Calculation

Dining Chair

For a dining chair with just cushions, a 54-inch wide roll of cloth is a great deal. With the left-over edges removed, a standard cushion fabric is approximately 24 to 27 inches square. This means you can cut two seat covers side by side across the width of the fabric. So sometimes you’ll find that while 0.5 to 0.75 yards is only a recommended amount for one chair, if you arrange it well, this little cloth can actually cover two chairs.

“Add 4 Inches” Principle

Why leave so many 4 inches? Because you need enough “tail” for your hands or strong pliers to pull the fabric hard so that the surface of the fabric is flat when the nail gun is driven in. Especially if your chair has a thicker sponge, or a raised center cushion, these 3 to 4 inches ensure the fabric perfectly wraps around the bottom plank and stays firmly in place on the back. When using a fabric with a firm, pull-resistant grain, you’ll find that even if you pull hard, the grain won’t go out of shape.

Calculation Of The Full Chair Covering With Backrest

If your project is more complex and involves a cushion plus backrest, the demand for fabric will directly double. You have to stock up by 1.5 to 2 yards per chair.

  • Cushion: The most basic force-bearing surface.
  • Front of the backrest: The side where your back rests.
  • Back of Back: The side behind the chair that usually requires a clean, flawless piece of fabric to finish it off.

Get The Pattern Aligned And Grain Oriented

Dining Chair

If you choose a fabric with large round flowers, flowers, or geometric patterns, you should never cut it as you like.

20% Law: You have to buy 20% more cloth to ensure that the pattern of each chair falls exactly in the center.

Vertical grain vs. horizontal grain: “Up-the-roll” means the pattern runs lengthwise down the roll. To make the dining room chairs look uniform, all of them must be cut in the same direction, which often creates more scraps, but this is the price you have to pay for aesthetics.

For Newbies “Insurance Margin”

I highly recommend adding half a yard “insurance margin” to your total order. The most painful thing is that a pair of scissors cut crookedly or the nail gun was misplaced, resulting in a difference of several inches in the end. This extra half yard of cloth allows you to practice what to do with “the corner”—— without any pressure. This is the most difficult technical job in dining chair renovation.
